Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about using Wallhaven — from downloading wallpapers to uploading your own work and accessing the API.
General
What is Wallhaven?
Wallhaven is a free, community-driven wallpaper
platform. Users can browse, download, upload,
and organise high-resolution desktop and mobile
wallpapers. The library contains over 1.3
million images spanning landscapes, anime art,
abstract design, nature photography,
architecture, and more.
Is Wallhaven free to use?
Yes. Browsing and downloading SFW wallpapers is
completely free and requires no account.
Creating a free account unlocks personal
collections, favorites, and access to additional
content tiers (Sketchy and NSFW, with explicit
opt-in).
What is the difference between SFW, Sketchy, and
NSFW?
SFW (Safe for Work) — suitable
for all audiences, accessible without an
account. Sketchy — borderline
content, not explicitly adult but potentially
unsuitable for some contexts; requires a
registered account and opt-in.
NSFW — adult content; requires
a registered account and explicit opt-in.
How many wallpapers does Wallhaven have?
As of the most recent count, Wallhaven hosts
over 1.3 million high-quality wallpapers,
uploaded by more than 1.6 million registered
users. The collection has been viewed nearly
four billion times in total.
Downloads & Resolutions
What image resolutions are available?
Wallhaven hosts wallpapers ranging from 1280×720
up to 7680×4320 (8K) and beyond, including
ultrawide formats (21:9, 32:9), standard
widescreen (16:9, 16:10), classic (4:3, 5:4),
and portrait formats for mobile screens. Use the
resolution and aspect ratio filters in Search to
find images that match your screen exactly.
Are downloads watermark-free?
Yes. All wallpapers on Wallhaven are served in
their original uploaded quality with no
watermarks, no forced compression, and no size
restrictions on downloads.
Do I need an account to download?
No. Any SFW wallpaper can be downloaded without
creating an account. An account is only required
to access Sketchy or NSFW content, save
favorites, or build personal collections.
Uploading
Can I upload my own wallpapers?
Yes. Registered users can upload wallpapers. All
uploads must meet minimum resolution
requirements, comply with the community rules,
and must not infringe copyright.
What file formats are accepted for upload?
Wallhaven accepts JPEG, PNG, and GIF image
files. Uploads must meet minimum dimension
thresholds; very low-resolution images will be
rejected.
How do I add tags to a wallpaper?
Tags can be added by any registered user on the
wallpaper detail page. Good tags help other
users discover wallpapers through search. If a
tag does not yet exist, you can create it.
API & Developers
Does Wallhaven have a public API?
Yes. Wallhaven provides a public REST API (v1)
that allows developers to search wallpapers,
retrieve image metadata, list tags, and access
user collections programmatically. Full
documentation is available at
wallhaven.pics/help/api.
Is scraping or mass-downloading allowed?
Automated bulk downloading is discouraged.
Wallhaven operates without advertising revenue
and its infrastructure is not designed to absorb
mass-download traffic. Please use the API
responsibly and within published rate limits.
Moderation & Rules
How do I report a rule-breaking wallpaper?
Registered users can flag any wallpaper for
review by clicking the flag icon on the
wallpaper detail page. Wallhaven staff review
all flagged content and take appropriate action.
Where can I find the community rules?
The full rules governing uploads, tags, and
community behaviour are published at
wallhaven.pics/rules.
